Tokyo logs record COVID cases for 3rd day in a row NHK

Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials reported more than 16,000 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, marking a record high for the third straight day.

The officials say they confirmed 16,538 new infections, up more than 2,400 from the previous day.

The latest tally is also a record for a Thursday, and is roughly 1.9 times higher than the figure for a week ago.

The officials also say the capital has 18 patients with serious symptoms, unchanged from Wednesday.
