Women's ice hockey starts ahead of Beijing Games' opening ceremony NHK

The Beijing Games will officially kick off with Friday's opening ceremony. But some competitions are already underway, including women's ice hockey where one of the tournament favorites got off to the perfect start.

Second-ranked Canada crushed Switzerland 12-1 in the first game of the preliminary round. Twenty-one-year-old Sarah Fillier opened the scoring just 64 seconds into her Olympic debut.

Canada is looking to retake the top spot, after losing the 2018 final to the US. That broke a streak of four consecutive golds in the event.

In the other group, Japan started its campaign with a victory over Sweden. Koike Shiori gave Japan the lead in the first period before Sweden drew level in the second.

But Japan added two goals in the final period to secure a 3-1 victory.
