Brazil reported more than 1,000 deaths from the coronavirus on Thursday amid a surge in infections with the Omicron variant. Health authorities confirmed a record-high daily tally of more than 298,000 new cases. The death toll reached 1,041, exceeding 1,000 for the first time since August. Omicron has been spreading rapidly in Brazil since around early January. Hospitals are under heavy pressure, with ICU occupancy rates topping 80 percent in nine out of 27 states. Health minister Marcelo Queiroga said Brazil is facing fresh struggles due to Omicron. He warned that the variant should not be taken lightly, even though symptoms could be mild. About 70 percent of Brazil's population have been fully vaccinated, but only around 20 percent have received a booster dose. The Brazilian government is rushing to secure hospital beds and administer booster shots to more people.
