The Japanese government is considering a request from the US to divert some of its imports of liquefied natural gas to Europe.
                
The administration of US President Joe Biden wants to prevent disruptions to Europe&#039;s supply amid tensions surrounding Ukraine.
                
Europe gets natural gas from Russia through pipelines. The US and its European allies have suggested that they will impose sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine.
                
Some observers say that could prompt Russia to reduce supplies to Europe.
                
Japanese Trade Minister Hagiuda Koichi declined to comment on the details of the government&#039;s discussion.
                
But he said &quot;Japan began importing LNG about 50 years ago, and has been leading the growth of this market ever since as a major importer. Generally speaking, and with that background in mind, we will look for ways to contribute to the international community.&quot;
                
Hagiuda also said the contribution must be made in a way that will not affect the daily lives of Japanese people during this cold winter.
                
He was referring to the fact that LNG accounts for 39 percent of the electricity generated in Japan, which is more than any other energy source.
                
Furthermore, utility companies have been trying to secure more than the usual amounts of LNG to prepare for a possible increase in demand this winter.
