US snowboarder Shaun White to retire after Beijing Olympics NHK

US snowboard great Shaun White has said he will retire after the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist, who is competing at his 5th Olympics in Beijing, told reporters on Saturday that this will be his last competition.

The 35-year-old snowboarder cited knee and back issues. He underwent knee surgery last summer.

He won his first halfpipe gold medal at the Torino Winter Olympics in 2006 and his second at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

He also earned gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, narrowly defeating Japan's Hirano Ayumu.

White said in the press conference that he is the year of the tiger, and it is pretty spot on about how competitive he is.

He expressed hope to enjoy his last Olympic Games as much as possible before he puts an end to his snowboarding career.
