A heavy snowfall that piled up in the northern city of Sapporo continues to disrupt public transport.
The city was covered with more than 1.2 meters of snow on Sunday evening.
Hokkaido Railway Company suspended all train services arriving or departing from Sapporo Station on Monday, as workers were not able to remove snow from the tracks quickly enough.
The company says this is the first time in 10 years that all train operations to and from the station have been suspended.
About 700 scheduled train runs were suspended, including those connecting with New Chitose Airport.
The railway company says trains scheduled for early Tuesday will also be suspended. It says it still cannot predict when services will resume.
Meanwhile, snow piled along roads has narrowed motorways, causing traffic congestion across Sapporo and forcing bus operators to halt their services.
Railway and bus companies are calling on residents to get the latest information through their websites.
