The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 18,287 new cases of the coronavirus in the capital on Wednesday. The daily tally is down about 3,300 from last Wednesday. It is the first time this year that the tally has fallen from a week earlier. Tokyo officials say 59 patients are in serious condition based on criteria set by the Metropolitan Government. The number is up eight from Tuesday. The hospital bed occupancy rate for coronavirus patients in Tokyo is 57.2 percent. That's up 1.4 percentage points from Tuesday. The rate on January 9 was 10.4 percent. The rate has risen nearly 50 points over the past month.
