Snow is forecast for wide areas of eastern Japan on Thursday and Friday. Weather officials say there may be heavy snow in Tokyo and the flat areas of the southern Kanto region.
                
Japan Meteorological Agency officials are urging people to follow the latest weather information. They are also advising individuals to be prepared for heavy snow by Wednesday.
                
Forecasters say a low pressure system will develop off the Pacific coast of central Japan by Thursday morning. They say it will move east as it grows. They add that a cold air mass is expected to flow into the Kanto-Koshin region.
                
It will reportedly bring snow to the region and to Shizuoka Prefecture on Thursday and Friday.
Snow will start falling in Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures early on Thursday. It will begin to fall in the southern Kanto region and Shizuoka Prefecture around dawn. Snow may accumulate in Tokyo and the flatlands of southern Kanto.
                
A maximum of 20 to 40 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in the 24 hours through Friday morning in Yamanashi Prefecture. Ten to 20 centimeters are forecast for Nagano and Shizuoka prefectures, northern Kanto and areas near the mountains in southern Kanto.
                
Five to 10 centimeters are expected in the plains of southern Kanto including Tokyo.
                
Weather officials say the amount of snow may increase, if the low pressure system develops further or temperatures are colder than anticipated. They say the snowfall in Tokyo may prompt them to issue warnings.
