Snow may accumulate in not only areas near the mountains but also Tokyo and the flatlands of southern Kanto.
In the 24 hours through Thursday evening, a maximum of 25 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in Yamanashi Prefecture, 20 centimeters in Nagano and Shizuoka prefectures and 15 centimeters in northern Kanto and areas near the mountains in southern Kanto. Up to eight centimeters is expected on the plains of southern Kanto and five centimeters in Tokyo.
In the 24 hours through Friday evening, another five to 10 centimeters of snow is forecast for wide areas in the Kanto-Koshin region. Up to five centimeters more is expected in Tokyo and Shizuoka.
Officials say the amount of snow may increase if temperatures are lower than forecast. They say more than 10 centimeters of snow in Tokyo is possible.
Weather reporters warn that even light accumulation can cause significant transportation disruption in the Kanto region, and cause automobiles to skid and pedestrians and cyclists to slip and fall.
