Snow is forecast for wide areas of eastern Japan on Thursday and Friday. There may be heavy snow in Tokyo and on the plains of the southern Kanto region. Japan Meteorological Agency officials say public transportation could be disrupted on Thursday evening. Forecasters say a low-pressure system will develop off the Pacific coast of central Japan by Thursday morning, and move east as it grows. They say it is expected to bring a cold air mass to the Kanto-Koshin region. They forecast snow in the region and Shizuoka Prefecture around dawn on Thursday and Friday. Snow may accumulate in not only areas near the mountains but also Tokyo and the flatlands of southern Kanto. In the 24 hours through Thursday evening, a maximum of 25 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in Yamanashi Prefecture, 20 centimeters in Nagano and Shizuoka prefectures and 15 centimeters in northern Kanto and areas near the mountains in southern Kanto. Up to eight centimeters is expected on the plains of southern Kanto and five centimeters in Tokyo. In the 24 hours through Friday evening, another five to 10 centimeters of snow is forecast for wide areas in the Kanto-Koshin region. Up to five centimeters more is expected in Tokyo and Shizuoka. Officials say the amount of snow may increase if temperatures are lower than forecast. They say more than 10 centimeters of snow in Tokyo is possible. Weather reporters warn that even light accumulation can cause significant transportation disruption in the Kanto region, and cause automobiles to skid and pedestrians and cyclists to slip and fall. Weather officials are calling on people to stay updated on the latest weather and traffic information. They are also warning of blackouts caused by snow on electric cables. Drivers are advised to equip their cars with winter tires or snow chains by Wednesday. Traffic disruption is expected on Thursday evening and Friday morning. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is calling on people to work from home or leave the office earlier. It also calls for canceling non-essential outings.
