The Thai government says it will not impose stricter COVID-19 measures on travelers from China. That is despite a surge in infections in China. Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul made the remark at a news conference on Thursday. Since last year, Thailand has not required negative coronavirus tests for arriving travelers. The minister said this policy will continue for tourists from any country. In 2019, around 11 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand. That's nearly 30 percent of foreign visitors to the country. The Thai government apparently hopes to revitalize its tourism industry by attracting Chinese visitors. The minister said this is an opportunity to reopen Thailand's economy and regain losses suffered during the past three years. Japan, the United States and others are stepping up border restrictions for travelers from China.
