The International Testing Agency says Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned substance in a doping test conducted in December. Fifteen year-old Valieva is a member of the Russian Olympic Committee figure skating team that won gold in the Beijing 2022 Games on Monday, but the medal ceremony scheduled for the following day did not take place. Some media outlets reported Valieva had tested positive for a prohibited substance. The ITA issued a statement on Friday confirming Valieva is the athlete at the center of the doping allegations. The agency is in charge of doping testing for the Beijing Winter Olympics. The ITA statement says Valieva had a doping test when she took part in a competition in Russia in December. It says she tested positive for trimetazidine -- a substance used to treat angina which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The ITA says the test result came from a laboratory in Stockholm on February 8, the day of the medal ceremony for the team event. Valieva was then provisionally suspended by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency. It says she challenged the suspension the following day and the agency lifted it after a hearing. The statement says the International Olympic Committee will appeal that decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. It adds that the ITA will lead the appeal on behalf of the IOC.
