US inflation accelerated in January NHK

US Labor Department officials have announced the highest inflation rate in 40 years. They said on Thursday that the rate in January rose 7.5 percent over a year earlier.

The consumer price index measures what people pay for a basket of goods and services. Americans find themselves paying more for the things they need.

Food prices rose 7 percent. Shelter rose 4.4 percent. Electricity rose 10.7 percent. Gasoline rose 40 percent.

A shortage of workers has tied up the supply chain and driven up prices. But some economists predict inflation will slow down over the course of the year.
