Bridge between US and Canada set to reopen after protesters cleared NHK

A bridge that serves as a key trade link between Canada and the United States is expected to reopen on Sunday after Canadian police cleared it of protesters.

Canadian protesters against vaccine mandates for cross-border truck drivers blocked the Ambassador Bridge last week. The bridge connects the Canadian state of Ontario, where the capital Ottawa is located, and the US state of Michigan.

The blockade has disrupted trade between the two countries.

On Saturday, Canadian police began to clear the bridge of protesters and trucks.

US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg spoke with their Canadian counterparts by phone on Sunday.

After the phone calls, the White House issued a statement saying the updates the secretaries received indicate that "most protesters have been cleared from the Ambassador bridge, barriers are being removed and the corridor is being secured."

Canadian authorities reportedly intend to reopen the bridge on Sunday after completing necessary safety checks.

Video shows police working to secure the area around the bridge in preparation for its reopening as protesters continue to rally in the vicinity.
