The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ruled figure skater Kamila Valieva of the Russian Olympic Committee will be allowed to continue to compete in the Beijing Olympics despite a positive anti-doping test. The 15-year-old, who failed a pre-Games drug test, is now expected to participate in the women's singles event starting Tuesday. CAS dismissed an appeal from the IOC and the World Anti-Doping Agency over the lifting of a temporary ban on the Russian figure skater. CAS said on the basis of the very limited facts of this case, and after consideration of the relevant legal issues, it has determined that no provisional suspension should be imposed on the athlete. Last Monday, Valieva helped her Russian Olympic Committee squad win gold in the team event. But the medal ceremony was put on hold when the International Testing Agency announced she had tested positive for a banned heart medication back in December. The Russian Anti-Doping Agency handed her a temporary suspension. Valieva challenged the ban, and it was lifted. Prior to the decision by CAS, IOC spokesman Mark Adams said in the press conference that the awarding of the medals for the team event cannot go ahead until the doping case is addressed.
