Japan has convened its National Security Council to discuss the situation surrounding Ukraine, as tensions remain high over the country. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa, Defense Minister Kishi Nobuo and other members of the council met for about 30 minutes on Monday. After being briefed on the latest situation, Kishida instructed his ministers to do all they can to protect Japanese nationals in Ukraine and coordinate diplomacy with the relevant countries. Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu told reporters that international tensions are running high and the situation is unpredictable. He said Japan will work with the international community, including the other G7 member nations, to appropriately deal with the issue. Matsuno also said some airlines have already suspended flights to and from Ukraine, and all flights in and out of the country could be canceled soon. He said Japan's government is advising its nationals to leave Ukraine immediately while commercial flights are still available. He said the government is studying various steps to respond to future developments.
