Despite the doping controversy hanging over her, teenage figure skater Kamila Valieva from the Russian Olympic Committee came out on top in the women&#039;s singles short program.
                
On Tuesday night, the 15-year-old failed in her opening triple axel jump, but after that she recovered to smoothly land a triple-triple combination jump. Her step and spin were also highly praised and she scored a mark of 82.16.
                
Her teammate Anna Shcherbakova was in second place, while Japan&#039;s Sakamoto Kaori took third.
                
Valieva will skate in the free program on Thursday. She has earned record scores several times this season, and is an absolute favorite to win gold.
                
On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed an appeal from the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency to prevent the lifting of a temporary ban on Valieva after it was revealed she tested positive for a banned heart medication in December.
                
The IOC said, as the doping case is still pending, there will be no medal ceremony if Valieva makes the podium in the singles.
