Ceasefire violations have been increasing in eastern Ukraine as conflict between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian armed groups continues. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe said its monitoring mission to Ukraine recorded 1,566 ceasefire violations, including explosions and gunfire, in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in a single day through Friday evening. Both sides say the other is responsible. A spokesperson for pro-Russian forces said on Thursday they had to fight in order to protect civilians. A Ukrainian military official said on Saturday Ukraine would not open retaliatory fire unless necessary to protect its civilians and soldiers.
