Strong winds and heavy snows are being observed in Japan's northern prefecture of Hokkaido and the northeastern region of Tohoku. The Meteorological Agency is warning of whiteout conditions with zero visibility until early Tuesday, with possible disruptions to transportation.

Weather officials say that during the 3 hours until 6 p.m. on Monday, wind gusts of over 122 kilometers per hour were recorded at Cape Erimo in Hokkaido, 118 kilometers per hour in Abashiri City, Hokkaido, and over 96 kilometers per hour in Akita City, Akita Prefecture.

They also say snowfalls intensified during the same period, with 12 centimeters observed at Kushiro Airport in Hokkaido, and 8 centimeters in Shirakawa Village, Gifu Prefecture in central Japan.

As a powerful winter pressure pattern will remain in place, gales and snow are likely until early Tuesday, mainly in Hokkaido and Tohoku.

Wind gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour are expected in Hokkaido and 72 kilometers per hour in Tohoku. Maximum gusts of 126 kilometers per hour are likely in Hokkaido, and 108 kilometers per hour in Tohoku.

Areas along the Sea of Japan are expected to see more snow. The Meteorological Agency forecasts up to 70 centimeters in Niigata, 50 centimeters in Hokkaido and Tohoku, and 40 centimeters in Gifu and Nagano prefectures during the 24-hour period through late Tuesday afternoon.

Weather officials are warning of possible traffic disruptions and blackouts caused by snow accumulation on power lines. They are also urging people to remain alert for avalanches and snow falling off rooftops.
