The Lower House of Japan's Diet has passed a record-high budget bill of 107.59 trillion yen, or roughly 940 billion dollars, for fiscal 2022. The general-account budget includes expenditures for coronavirus measures and wage hikes for nurses, caregivers and other workers. Debates were held in the Lower House plenary session before Tuesday's vote. The bill won a majority of votes from the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party, its coalition partner Komeito and others. The opposition Democratic Party for the People also backed the bill for the first time ever. The chamber's secretariat office says it was also the first time since 1994 for any opposition party to show support for a budget bill for a new fiscal year. The bill has been sent to the Upper House. Even without a vote in that chamber, it will be automatically enacted on March 23 based on stipulations in the Constitution, before the fiscal year finishes at the end of the month. The passage of the bill in the Lower House is the second-earliest since 1999, during the administration of then-Prime Minister Obuchi Keizo.
