Ukraine set to declare nationwide state of emergency NHK

Ukraine's government is set to introduce a nationwide state of emergency as fears loom of further conflict with Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council on Wednesday.

After the meeting, council chief Oleksiy Danilov told reporters a state of emergency will be introduced in areas other than the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where one is already in place.

The state of emergency will last for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days.

Also on Wednesday, Ukraine's military started calling up reservists aged 18 to 60. The maximum service period is one year.
