The deteriorating situation in Ukraine has drawn expressions of concern and condemnation from countries in Southeast Asia. The Indonesian government has spoken out against the Russian attack, saying it seriously endangers peace in the region.
                
Teuku Faizasyah of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said that the country condemns any action that clearly constitutes a violation of the territory and sovereignty of a nation.
                
The ministry called on all parties to prioritize negotiations and diplomacy to stop the conflict. But it also expressed a negative stance toward sanctions.
                
Earlier on Tuesday, the Singapore Foreign Ministry said it is gravely concerned about the Russian decision to recognize two breakaway Ukraine regions. It said the sovereignty of Ukraine must be respected.
                
Thailand also expressed deep worry over the escalation of tensions in the region. The government said it supports efforts to find a settlement through dialogue.
                
The crisis in Ukraine is seemingly remote from ASEAN countries. But an economic expert in Thailand says it could affect the region&#039;s economy by impacting inflation and exports.
                
Amonthep Chawla, Chief Economist at CIMB Thai Bank, says, &quot;It will hurt the consumption and production in the region. Countries that heavily rely on imports of oil get hit the most. Basically, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam to some extent, the Philippines as well. So, these are the reasons the countries would get hit a lot more.&quot;
                
He also warned that any involvement by China in the conflict would heighten the risks for ASEAN economies.
