China's foreign ministry has called for restraint and talks for all countries involved in the Ukraine situation.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Thursday that China is closely monitoring the latest developments in the Ukraine situation.
She said China calls on all countries concerned to exercise self-restraint in order to prevent the situation from getting out of control.
Hua went on to say China hopes that the countries will not shut the door to peace and continue with efforts for dialogue and consultations, so that the situation does not escalate any further.
Asked whether China thinks the Russian action amounts to an invasion of Ukraine, she declined to give a clear answer.
She instead stated repeatedly the Ukraine issue has an extremely complicated historical background and circumstances, and that has led to the current situation.
The spokesperson said that the United States has been sending a large amount of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. She criticized these US actions, saying they have escalated tensions and heightened the risks of war in Ukraine.
