Ukraine braces for assault on Kyiv NHK

Officials in Ukraine say they expect Russian tanks to launch an attack on the capital city, Kyiv. An adviser to the interior minister warned on social media "It could become the hardest day in the war."

The adviser said they were ready to defend Kyiv with anti-tank missiles supplied by foreign countries.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said the country's airborne assault troops blew up a bridge on the outskirts of the city to prevent a column of Russian forces from advancing toward the capital.

Ukrainian media reported multiple explosions in Kyiv on Friday. The country's president said that at least 130 people have been killed and more than 300 wounded.

Russian forces have reportedly attacked Ukraine from three sides... not just from the east, but also from Crimea and from Belarus.

Pro-Russian officials in the breakaway regions suggest Putin wants to seize new lands.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to stay in Kyiv.

Zelenskyy said, "According to our information, the enemy has listed me as target number one, and my family as target number two. They want to destroy the country politically, terminating the head of state."

The US Sectary of State said in an interview that Russia is planning attacks, not just on Kyiv, but other cities too.

Ukrainian forces have reportedly already lost control of Chernobyl.

The site of the world's worst nuclear disaster remains radioactive more than 35 years later. The UN's nuclear watchdog is watching the situation.

The International Atomic Energy Agency issued a statement urging restraint to avoid any nuclear dangers.

Rafael Grossi said "It is of vital importance that the safe and secure operations of the nuclear facilities in that zone should not be affected or disrupted in any way."

The US president promised Putin will bear the consequences of choosing war.

Joe Biden unveiled more sanctions, targeting five major Russian banks.

He says every asset the Russians have in the US will be frozen. The US Treasury Department says Russian banks conduct about 46 billion dollars' worth of foreign transactions daily, with 80 percent in US dollars.

Biden said, "We have purposely designed these sanctions to maximize a long term impact on Russia and to minimize the impact on the United States and our allies."

Biden says sanctions against Putin himself are "still on the table." But, he provided no details.

Still, Biden vowed that the measures will be a "major hit" to the leader's "long-term strategic ambitions." He says he has no plans to talk with Putin.

The US is sending 7,000 troops to Germany to help reassure NATO allies. They'll be deployed elsewhere, within days.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second biggest city, people including young children crowded into a subway station that's serving as a bomb shelter.

Some people are fleeing their homes and seeking safety in neighboring Poland. They move by train, by car and even by foot.

A woman with her children said, "We fled our home because we're afraid of what would happen next. We want peace and we want to go home."

The Polish government has set up shelters at a sports facility near the border.

The United Nations refugee agency says the humanitarian costs of the invasion will be devastating.

It went on to say "there are no winners in war, but countless lives will be torn apart."
