A Ukrainian member of parliament has told NHK World that people in Kyiv are trying to take part in the resistance against the Russian forces in any way possible.
Lawmaker Inna Sovsun now has a gun for the first time in her life. She says weapons were provided to all members of parliament after the first attack. Now she's ready to defend herself and the capital.
She told NHK, "Because this is my city, we're not giving it to the Russians and we don't have anywhere to surrender."
Her 61-year-old father is also going to help defend the country, even though he has trouble with his knees.
He says at least, he could crawl.
Western countries have decided to cut Russia from the SWIFT global payment system. Sovsun appreciates the move, but says further steps are needed.
She said, "Unfortunately, it is happening slightly later, but it is happening now and it will affect the Russian economy. But that is not enough. The thing that we are asking most right now is a full trade embargo."
Sovsun stresses that if other countries continue to trade with Russia, the money will be used to buy weapons to kill Ukrainians.
And she warns the world that the invasion is not just between two countries.
Sovsun said, "Please remember that this is not the war between Ukraine and Russia. This is actually Russia's war against the whole civilized world, that is defying the basic principles of international law and simple human decency with what they are doing now."
She added, "If they are not stopped here in Ukraine, that will proceed further."
