Putin orders 'special combat service regime' in deterrence force NHK

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued orders to introduce what he called a "special combat service regime" to bolster the military's deterrence force.

He gave the directive on Sunday to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov.

He is believed to have given the order with nuclear deterrence in mind.

Putin said NATO's leading countries have been making "aggressive statements" against Russia.

Putin is also believed to be trying to keep Western nations in check.

Western countries have been moving to block access by some Russian banks to the SWIFT international payment system, which is seen as one of the toughest financial sanctions to date.
