The United States has welcomed Japan's announcement that it will join other countries in isolating Russia from the international financial system.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki released a statement on Sunday welcoming the move to be taken in response to the Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has announced that Tokyo plans to join the US, Canada and European countries in banning select Russian banks from the SWIFT global interbank payment system.

Kishida also said Japan will freeze the financial assets of Russian President Vladimir Putin and other key officials.

Psaki noted that all Group of Seven countries now support these steps.

She said, "Prime Minister Kishida and the Government of Japan have been leaders in condemning President Putin's attack on Ukraine."

Psaki added, "We will continue working closely together to impose further severe costs and make Putin's war of choice a strategic failure."

Regarding further sanctions on Russia, Psaki said in an ABC interview that energy sanctions are "certainly on the table."

She said, "We have not taken those off. But we also want to do that and make sure we're minimizing the impact on the global marketplace, and do it in a united way."
