An attempt to evacuate people from the eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol has failed for the second consecutive day as a temporary ceasefire did not hold. Evacuations from the strategically important city were to take place on Saturday and Sunday based on a deal between Russia and Ukraine. But Mariupol officials say the attempt failed on both days amid continued attacks. Russia and Ukraine are accusing each other of carrying out attacks. The International Committee of the Red Cross, which supports evacuations from the city, expressed its concerns. It tweeted, "People are living in terror in Mariupol, desperate for safety." Russian forces continued their attacks on many parts of Ukraine on Sunday. Russian defense ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said a missile attack targeted an airport in the central Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the airport was completely destroyed. He added the Russian military is destroying the lives and infrastructure that the people of Ukraine have built up over generations. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says 364 civilians, including 25 children, have been killed across Ukraine since Russia began invading the country. Russian President Vladimir Putin talked with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by phone on Sunday. The Kremlin says Putin stressed during the talks that he can halt the "special military operation" only if Ukraine ceases hostilities and fulfills Russia's demands. The remark indicates that Putin is sticking to his demands for what he calls Ukraine's demilitarization and neutralization. Delegates from Russia and Ukraine are expected to hold their third round of talks as early as on Monday. But there appears to be little prospect for a breakthrough.
