Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said China is ready to work with the international community to mediate talks between Russia and Ukraine when necessary.
Wang was speaking on Monday at a news conference on the sidelines of a National People's Congress meeting in Beijing.
He called for settling disputes by peaceful means through dialogue and negotiations.
Wang said China is willing to continue to play a constructive role to facilitate Russia-Ukraine dialogue, and work with the international community to carry out necessary mediation.
He announced plans to provide Ukraine with emergency humanitarian aid.
In a reference to Japan, Wang said sensitive issues over history and Taiwan affect the foundation of mutual trust.
He said he hopes Japan will honor the series of solemn commitments it has made on these matters to avoid a serious disruption in bilateral relations.
Wang went on to say that the Taiwan question is entirely an internal Chinese matter. He stressed the difference in nature of the situation surrounding Ukraine, saying the two are not at all comparable.
On China-US relations, he said the United States continues to engage in intense, zero-sum competition with China. He said the US keeps provoking China on issues concerning the country's core interests.
Wang said this is not how a responsible power should act.
