Japan sending bullet-proof vests to Ukraine NHK

A Japanese Self-Defense Force aircraft is on its way to deliver bullet-proof vests and helmets to help Ukraine as the country tries to defend itself against Russian forces.

The KC-767 transport aircraft left the Komaki Air Base in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, on Tuesday night for Poland, which shares a border with Ukraine.

This is the first time the SDF has provided bullet-proof vests to another country.

The Japanese government has decided to provide non-lethal supplies in response to a request from Ukraine.

The items also include heavy winter clothes and emergency food supplies.

Japanese guidelines on the transfer of defense equipment ban providing items to parties in conflict.

The government explains that the term applies to countries where an armed attack has occurred, and are subject to UN Security Council measures aimed at maintaining or restoring international peace and security. It says Ukraine does not fit that definition.

The Defense Ministry plans to deliver more equipment and supplies to Ukraine once they are ready.
