Zelenskyy tells British lawmakers Ukraine will never surrender NHK

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a speech to British lawmakers via videolink that his country will fight to the end.

Zelenskyy addressed the House of Commons on Tuesday. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the other members stood and applauded before the speech.

The Ukrainian president described the 13 days of fighting as the war that "we did not start and we did not want." He said, "But we are waging it. Because we do not want to lose what we have, what is ours -- Ukraine."

Zelenskyy said more than 50 children have been killed since the invasion started. He added that there are people who do not have access to water.

The president went on to say, "'To be or not to be?' You know this Shakespearean question well. Thirteen days ago, this question could still be raised about Ukraine. But not now. Obviously, to be. Obviously, to be free."

He reminded the audience of a statement that former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill made during a famous speech in 1940. Referencing that statement, he said, "We shall not give up, we shall not lose! We shall fight in the seas, we shall fight in the air, we shall defend our land, whatever the cost may be."

He asked Britain and other countries to use sanctions to increase the pressure on Russia.
