EU leaders vow to shift away from Russian energy NHK

The leaders of the European Union have agreed to boost their defense budget and reduce the bloc's dependence on Russian energy.

They released a declaration on Friday after wrapping up a two-day summit in Versailles, France.

The leaders agreed to phase out Russian natural gas, oil, and coal imports as soon as possible.

EU President Charles Michel called for a plan that would ensure European sovereignty and strategic independence. He added that the declaration will go down in history.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that a proposal will be set out by mid-May on phasing out the EU's dependence on Russian fossil fuels by 2027.
