The leaders of the European Union have agreed to boost their defense budget and reduce the bloc's dependence on Russian energy. They released a declaration on Friday after wrapping up a two-day summit in Versailles, France. The leaders agreed to phase out Russian natural gas, oil, and coal imports as soon as possible. EU President Charles Michel called for a plan that would ensure European sovereignty and strategic independence. He added that the declaration will go down in history. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that a proposal will be set out by mid-May on phasing out the EU's dependence on Russian fossil fuels by 2027.
