Pentagon: Russia violently attacking Ukraine's population centers NHK

The US Defense Department says Russia has launched more than 900 missiles since it started its military operation in Ukraine.

A senior Pentagon official spoke to reporters on Monday. The official said Russian forces are trying to subdue population centers "with ever more violence using more and more long-range fires, which are indiscriminate in terms of what they're hitting."

The official referred to Sunday's airstrikes on a Ukrainian military facility in western Ukraine. The facility is located near the border with Poland. The official said at least seven structures were damaged at the site. The person also said that the attack was launched from inside Russia's airspace. Dozens of air-launched cruise missiles were reportedly used.

Russia's defense ministry said earlier that a structure housing a large cache of foreign weapons and military equipment was among the targets.

But the Pentagon official noted that the facility had not been used to store the security assistance shipments that the US sent Ukraine. The individual added that the attack had not affected any of those materials.

The official said that Russia's forces did not make a lot of progress over the weekend. The individual said, "Almost all of Russia's advances remain stalled."

The person said the Russian troops that are closest to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv are still about 15 kilometers northwest of the city. The official attributed that situation to resistance from the Ukrainian forces.

But the individual expressed the view that the Russians still appear to have about 90 percent of their combat capabilities.
