The Japanese government plans to offer Ukrainian evacuees who come to Japan the option of obtaining a one-year visa that enables them to work. Government officials have said they plan to actively accept Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion. The 47 Ukrainians who have arrived in Japan as of Sunday have already been granted short-term 90-day visas. Justice Minister Furukawa Yoshihisa told reporters on Tuesday that the Ukrainians can switch to a "designated activities" status if they wish, allowing them to live and work in Japan for up to a year. Furukawa said his ministry will also launch a taskforce headed by the administrative vice minister to provide the necessary support for the Ukrainian evacuees. The minister said the government as a whole should offer wide-ranging assistance that meets the specific needs of each individual.
