China has reported a daily count of more than 5,000 coronavirus infections amid a surge in cases involving the Omicron variant.
Health authorities say that 5,154 new cases were confirmed on Monday, including those in which no symptoms could be seen.
Similar figures have not been seen since February 2020, when the coronavirus was spreading among people in Wuhan, Hubei Province.
Authorities in the northeastern province of Jilin confirmed over 4,000 cases on Monday. In the main city of Changchun, a strict curfew is being imposed, forcing Toyota Motor to suspend operations at its plant there on Monday and Tuesday.
In the southern province of Guangdong, a manufacturing hub, residents of Shenzhen have been told to stay home. On Tuesday, the neighboring city of Dongguan began restricting residents' movements and suspending operations of plants in areas where infections have been confirmed.
The Chinese government is concerned that a further spread of infections could impact manufacturing output and the country's economic recovery.
