Earthquake causes blackouts in wide areas NHK

The tremor caused blackouts in wide areas of Japan.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says more than 2 million households were without power in nine prefectures, including Tokyo and Kanagawa.

An operator of thermal power plants in Fukushima Prefecture says two of its plants' operations were suspended after the earthquake. The plants provide electricity to the greater Tokyo area.
