Heavy rain is forecast from western to northeastern Japan on Friday and Saturday, including areas affected by Wednesday's earthquake. The Meteorological Agency says a low pressure system accompanied by a rain front is expected to move eastward along the southern coast of Japan's mainland from Friday through Saturday. The low pressure system is expected to develop rapidly off the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan. Southern Kyushu, Shikoku and the Nansei Islands in Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures may receive downpours of more than 50 millimeters per hour with localized thunder from early Friday morning. In Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures hit by Wednesday's earthquake, rain or snow is expected to start falling from Friday and may intensify on Saturday. In the 24 hours through Friday evening, southern Kyushu may receive up to 200 millimeters of rain. Up to 150 millimeters may fall in Shikoku, 120 millimeters in northern Kyushu and Okinawa, and 100 millimeters in Amami, Kagoshima Prefecture. During the one-day period from Friday evening through Saturday evening, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures are expected to receive 50 to 100 millimeters of rain. Rough seas are also forecast along the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan with intensifying winds due to the developing low pressure system. Weather officials are warning against possible landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers. They are also alerting that strong winds, high waves, lightning strikes, tornadoes and other gusty winds are possible.
