US President Joe Biden will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday. The White House announced plans for the call on Thursday, saying the Biden administration wants to maintain "open lines of communication." It says the leaders will discuss the war in Ukraine and the competition between their countries. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met earlier this week with Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi. He warned against any efforts by Beijing to support Russia or to undercut Ukraine. Chinese leaders have indeed moved closer to the Russians. Xi and Putin reinforced those ties during the Winter Olympics in Beijing just days before the invasion.
