A growing number of Ukrainians who fled the Russian attacks in their homeland to neighboring Poland are developing health problems, mainly due to long journeys, cold weather and anxiety. More than 1.8 million people have crossed into Poland from Ukraine. The Polish city of Rzeszow, located about 70 kilometers from the border, serves as a transit point for evacuees. A temporary shelter was set up at a shopping mall in central Rzeszow. Some 300 evacuees rested there on Thursday, including children, mothers and elderly people. A Nigerian doctor is working as a volunteer at a makeshift clinic in the shelter. The doctor said many children have cold symptoms, while adults are complaining of leg pain caused by long journeys on foot. The doctor said more medicines are needed, but above all, he wants more medical professionals in order to give proper care to evacuees. A woman who evacuated from the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy visited the clinic, carrying her 11-month-old daughter who was suffering a high fever and coughing. The mother said her baby fell ill as they made their way to Poland by train. She said her biggest hope is for peace to be restored in Ukraine, but she is currently concerned about the health of her child.
