NATO conducts major drill in Norway NHK

NATO member countries are conducting a large-scale military drill in Norway, amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

About 30,000 people from 27 countries are taking part in the exercise. Individuals from Sweden and Finland are among the participants. Those two countries are not members of NATO. The drill will conclude on April 1.

The exercise simulates an attack on Norway. Units from France, Spain and Poland took part in rapid response force training at a base in southern Norway on Thursday. Media representatives were allowed to watch the practice session.

The Norwegian military is hosting the drill. It says the exercise has been conducted every other year since 2006 and is not directly linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But NATO Military Committee Chair Admiral Rob Bauer told reporters that it is even more important now to "prepare for the worst and expect the unexpected."
