By prefecture, Tokyo had the highest number at 6,502, followed by Kanagawa with 4,371, Saitama with 3,323 and Osaka with 2,908.
The health ministry says 955 patients are in serious condition and are on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines or in intensive care.
The number of seriously ill patients is down 28 from Saturday.
