The Russian military is stepping up pressure as it aims to seize the eastern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.
                
Russia&#039;s defense ministry said on Tuesday that pro-Russian forces are expanding areas under their control in eastern Ukraine.
                
Russia is demanding that Ukrainian forces defending Mariupol lay down their arms and surrender the city, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Ukraine will not submit to ultimatums from Russia.
                
The UK&#039;s defense ministry on Tuesday said that despite heavy fighting, Ukrainian forces continue to repulse Russian attempts to occupy Mariupol.
                
Zelenskyy indicated during an interview with TV networks on Monday that he wants to seek common ground through talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
                
He said that without a meeting with his Russian counterpart in any format, it would be impossible to truly understand what Russia is prepared to do to stop the war.
                
Moscow says more progress needs to be made in negotiations with Ukraine.
