Ukrainians in the city of Mariupol have seen Russian shells fall on their city since the first day of the invasion. On Wednesday, they came under fire again, from a new direction.

Almost 100,000 civilians had hoped to follow their neighbors out of the city. But they're trapped by near constant bombardment. Now, Russian forces are firing on them from warships in the Sea of Azov.

Residents of the capital, Kyiv, have come under a hail of rockets. Some shells hit near the city center. They damaged homes and left some on fire.

Ukrainian fighters have managed to retake two strategic suburbs. But Russian forces are stripping away their defenses.

Officials with the defense ministry in Moscow said their troops had shot down 430 Ukrainian aircraft, including helicopters and drones. And the Russians have destroyed hundreds of armored vehicles.

The government's top spokesperson has refused to rule out the use of nuclear weapons. But Dmitry Peskov said they would only consider that option if Russia faced what he called an "existential threat."
