Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stressed the need for a ceasefire in Ukraine in a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Turkey's presidential office says that the two leaders on Sunday discussed the situation in Ukraine and progress in ceasefire negotiations.

Erdogan stressed the need for an early ceasefire and an improvement of humanitarian conditions in the region.

The office says the two leaders agreed to hold the next round of ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Ukrainian negotiators also said on Sunday that they will soon meet their Russian counterparts face-to-face in Turkey.
