The coronavirus lockdown in China's economic hub Shanghai is starting to affect the movement of goods. Coronavirus infections have been surging in China since the beginning of this month. Authorities confirmed 6,886 cases nationwide on Monday, 4,477 of them in Shanghai. Most of those who tested positive had no symptoms. Authorities in Shanghai on Monday began the first phase of a two-stage lockdown through April 5, dividing the city into two areas. At Pudong Airport on the eastern side of Shanghai, where the lockdown is underway, cargo flights to and from Japan were canceled on Monday and Tuesday. That was because All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines employees were unable to work due to strict restrictions on outings. At the port which handles the world's largest volume of containers, cargo ships are being unloaded, but there is a shortage of delivery drivers. If the lockdown is prolonged, the supply chain could be disrupted further. The lockdown imposed on Shanghai so far is shorter than those for other cities, suggesting authorities want to minimize the impact on the economy. But it is uncertain whether infections can be brought under control in just over one week.
