UNSC discusses Russia-Ukraine ceasefire talks NHK

The UN Security Council met on Tuesday to discuss the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

Delegates commented on the ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine held earlier in the day in Istanbul, Turkey.

US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said her country is "focused on what Russian forces do, not what Russia says."

Sherman said the only way to end this humanitarian catastrophe is through "the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory and away from Ukraine's borders."

Ukraine's Ambassador to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, called on member nations to continue to support his country and implement sanctions on Russia.

Kyslytsya said, "it is still a long way to a sustainable ceasefire and comprehensive de-escalation."

Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, said his country is "implementing humanitarian obligations it has taken upon itself" in Ukraine. He did not mention the latest peace talks.
