Candidates jump into race for Bangkok governor NHK

In Thailand, more than a dozen candidates for Bangkok governor have officially kicked off their election campaign for the post. The election is being held for the first time since 2013 due to the military coup, which the current prime minister led in 2014.

Twenty candidates submitted their application on Thursday to run for governor.
After registering, they began campaigning in the presence of their supporters.

Chadchart Sittipunt is the frontrunner according to recent surveys. He was the transportation minister during then Prime Minister Yingluk's administration, which was ousted in the coup.
Meanwhile, incumbent governor Aswin Kwanmuang, who was appointed after the coup, and other candidates from parties in the parliament, follow in the rankings.

The election will be held on May 22. The outcome may reflect how much support Prime Minister Prayuth's administration has among the people.
