Foreign and defense ministers from Japan and the Philippines are scheduled to hold talks next week. This will be the first &quot;two-plus-two&quot; meeting between the two countries.
                
Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana spoke to NHK about the upcoming talks on April 9 in Tokyo.
                
Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and Defense Minister Kishi Nobuo will meet with Philippine Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin and Defense Secretary Lorenzana.
                
The two sides are likely to confirm cooperation in realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific region, with China&#039;s increased maritime activity in the South China Sea in mind. The Philippines and China have been at odds over territory in the region.
                
The ministers from Japan and the Philippines are also expected to exchange views on the situation in Ukraine.
