Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa has visited a facility in Poland that houses people who fled Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Hayashi is in Poland as Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's special envoy to prepare for accepting Ukrainian evacuees. Hayashi met his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in Warsaw on Saturday, and conveyed Japan's resolve to support the country. During the visit to the refugee facility, Hayashi heard from the Ukrainians what kind of support they need. Speaking to reporters, Hayashi said the visit was a useful opportunity for the Japanese government to consider how to help Ukrainian evacuees when they arrive in Japan. The Japanese government is planning to bring those who wish to come to Japan on Hayashi's return flight. So far, about 20 people reportedly hope to come to Japan. Hayashi is scheduled to visit an area bordering Ukraine on Sunday and exchange views with officials of an international organization that is working to support evacuees.
